Gold has been used as an investment asset for a long time. It is valuable and tends not to be a liability in terms of problems associated with companies or governments as it usually performs independently of other investments and economic factors. Gold has maintained a long-time value and comes in many forms making it perfect as a portfolio diversifier. Gold is a commodity as well as a monetary asset and can provide a more secure form of asset for a portfolio. It has remained stable in times of fluctuation and market turmoil.

Gold investment can mean investing in gold bars, coins, gold certificates or even gold jewellery. There are some varying types of gold accounts and funds available. The funds can include gold mining opportunities which are more risky than using gold assets alone. Gold accounts can be known as allocated or unallocated accounts. The holding of gold in an allocated account is like storing the gold in a deposit box. Gold can also be held in unallocated accounts where the investors generally do not take physical possession of the gold and instead have bars or coins assigned to them. There is no form of storage charge on this type of account.
